This page provides general guidelines for using V-Ray Decal with V-Ray Displacement.

 

Overview


V-Ray Decal offers you an easy way to project one material on top of another regardless of the target UV set. The Displacement mapping adds further detail on the V-Ray Decal and its geometry without having to model it first.

This tutorial offers guidance for working with a V-Ray Decal that has V-Ray Displacement.

The scene used here contains a Bluetooth speaker geometry placed in a studio lighting setting. The details of the speaker’s fabric parts are created with V-Ray Enmesh.

 

 

Preparation


Follow the steps of Multiple V-Ray Decals on Curved Objects tutorial to add the V-Ray Decal and apply materials to it.

Information on V-Ray Displacement is available in the Adding Displacement to Object tutorial.

 

Workflow


Let’s first render the scene without any displacement on the V-Ray Decal.

Note that the plastic part of the geometry has fine displacement details. It has been added from the V-Ray Shelf’s Subdivs Properties button. There are other ways to add displacement details to a geometry, e.g. with the help of textures plugged to the geometry material.

 

 


 

  • In the V-Ray Decal parameters, add a suitable Displacement Texture.
  • Set the Displacement Amount value. Higher values produce a bigger displacement effect. Negative values can also be entered to make the displacement push the geometry inside the object. Don’t leave the Displacement Amount at 0.0 because it will have no effect.
    In this particular case, the value is set to 5; while the Amount Multiplier in the speaker’s V-Ray Displacement properties is set to a much lower value of 0.1
  • Render.

 

 


 

Here’s how the speaker looks with a V-Ray Decal and V-Ray Displacement. Notice that the displacement detail from the plastic is transferred to the decal as well. Basically it is added to the original decal displacement. 

 

 


 

  • Enable the Use Only Decal Displacement option. Thus, the original surface displacement of the speaker is not taken into account in the final image.
  • Render.

 

 


 

Final Result

Now, the V-Ray Decal renders only with the displacement assigned to its material, making the silver text surface smooth, while the black plastic is displaced.
