This page provides information on working with MaterialX in V-Ray for Maya.

LookDevX Workflow

MaterialX shaders loaded with USD files can be rendered with V-Ray for Maya.

With LookDevX, you can examine and modify the shading graphs of MaterialX files in USD stages with interactive updates in V-Ray IPR.

Create New MaterialX Materials

You can create new materials for objects directly in a USD stage.

You can choose from V-Ray materials represented as MaterialX nodes or any shading nodes that come with the standard MaterialX library.

Change MaterialX Material Assignments

You can change the material assignments directly in the Outliner within the USD stage.

Any newly created MaterialX material will appear in the mtl scope in the USD stage.

Export Workflow

Native V-Ray material networks in Maya can be exported to .mtlx files with the Export Materials to MaterialX tool found under the V-Ray menu > Tools > Export Materials to MaterialX.

The exported files can later be reused by loading them with the VRayMaterialX loader material and directly assigned to native Maya geometry. The files can also be transferred to other applications that support MaterialX, such as Houdini's Solaris.

This tool exports V-Ray materials from native Maya nodes to MaterialX nodes.

Loading .mtlx Files for Rendering

MaterialX files can be loaded in V-Ray for Maya with the new VRayMaterialX material and directly assigned to native Maya geometry outside a USD stage. This allows using any readily available .mtlx files for rendering.

Loading a .mtlx file displays all materials stored in the file and allows choosing which material from the list is used for rendering.
