This page covers the basics of distributed rendering in Chaos Corona for Cinema 4D. 

 

Overview


Thanks to distributed rendering you can render a single frame faster by using multiple computers on your local network. 

The rendering speedup resulting from using multiple computers is nearly linear. This means that if you can render an image to a satisfying quality using a single computer in 10 minutes, you can render the same image to the same quality using two computers of the same type in 5 minutes.
Some time penalty is expected though, especially when rendering large scenes in high resolution. This is the result of network bandwidth limits for transferring the data between the master machine and the render nodes. 

Distributed rendering should be used when multiple computers are rendering one single image. If you need to render a sequence of frames, so that each computer is rendering a different frame, it is advised to use other network rendering solutions instead, such as the browser (web) interface of the Team Render server

Master Machine


The master is the machine where the distributed rendering is initiated. It is running Cinema 4D with the user interface visible and has distributed rendering enabled in Corona render settings. It is rendering on its own, but also sending scene data to the render nodes and collecting the rendered pixels from them.

 

 Since the master machine is both rendering and displaying the Cinema 4D user interface, it requires one interface license (GUI) and one Render node license.

 

To enable distributed rendering use the following instructions:

  1. In Cinema 4D, enable Team Render by going to the menu Edit > Preferences > Renderer > Team Render, and check the Enable Team Render option.
  2. For machines that will act as clients, run Cinema 4D's Team Render Client service from the Windows start menu.
  3. Once enabled, check that the Machine List is as expected (under the Cinema 4D menu Render > Team Render Machines).

Machines can be added to this list automatically or manually (see Cinema 4D help for full details). You may need to verify the machines on the list and enter the security token for that machine (and sometimes you may need to unverify then verify the machine)

Render Node Machine


A render node is a machine that renders the scene and sends the rendered data back to the master. The data rendered on all render nodes is sent to the master machine and merged there, together with the data rendered by the master machine itself.

In order for a rendering node to be ready to receive rendering jobs, simply open the Team Render Client instead of the regular Cinema 4D UI.

 Since a render node machine is only rendering the scene, with no Cinema 4D user interface visible, it only requires one render node license.

Master machine and rendering nodes must all be using the same version of Cinema 4D. All instances of Corona Renderer must be the same.

Mix-matching versions will result in an error. If any plugins are being used in the render, they must also be installed on all the computers (master and rendering nodes).
