This page introduces the different material types in V-Ray for Houdini.

Overview

There are a number of different materials for use with V-Ray for Houdini. These materials are quite versatile and each can be used in a number of ways to achieve different looks as needed from simulating simple surface properties like plastics and metals, to simulating complex uses such as translucent objects, subsurface materials such as skin, and even light emitting objects.

Some basic information on each material can be found below, but for more details, please see the dedicated pages for each one.

Note: While V-Ray will render perfectly using Houdini's own standard materials, these V-Ray specific materials offer a higher level of illumination and surface accuracy, as well as several features not found in standard Houdini versions.

V-Ray Material Node

The V-Ray Material (vrayMaterialBuilder) node is a container that allows you to create V-Ray materials, textures, and additional V-Ray nodes.

By default, it creates a V-Ray Material (BRDFVRayMtl) connected to a V-Ray Material Output node. For additional information, see the V-Ray Material (Builder) page.
