Overview


This guide is to serve as a reference for installation of V-Ray 3.0 for  Softimage. Please refer to the Glossary section for specific terms used in this document.

You can download the latest official version of V-Ray 3.0 from http://www.chaosgroup.com with the account supplied to you by Chaos Group or your reseller.

A complete installation of V-Ray 3.0 for Softimage consists of:

System requirements


Please make sure that your system fulfills these requirements before installing V-Ray.

ProcessorIntel Pentium IV or compatible processor with SSE2 support
To use Embree you need CPU which supports SSE4.2 instruction set.
RAM4 GB RAM and 4 GB swap minimum – recommended 8 GB or more RAM, 8 GB or more swap file
Operating systemWindows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, 64 bit versions only
SoftimageSoftimage 2012 or later, 64 bit versions only
USB portRequired for hardware lock, preferably USB 2.0
TCP/IPOnly IPv4 is supported. IPv6 is currently not supported.

Warning

V-Ray 3.0 requires V-Ray License server 3.0!

Installing the Dongle Drivers


The WIBU-KEY drivers are necessary for running the V-Ray License Server which is used to license V-Ray.

If you already have the WIBU-KEY drivers installed on the machine, you can skip this section. Otherwise follow these steps.

Note: Please make sure that you have the proper USB drivers installed on your machine.

 

  1. Make sure that the dongle is NOT plugged-in.

  2. Make sure your account has administrative privileges and run the installation file WkRuntime64.exe that came with the V-Ray 3.0 for Softimage installation archive

  3. Follow the instructions of the installer. You do not need to install the WIBU-KEY network server and monitor


Installing the License Server


Once you have the dongle drivers installed, you can plug in the dongle into a free USB port of the machine. The dongle must be plugged into the machine every time you need to run the V-Ray license server.

To install the V-Ray license server make sure your Windows account has administrative privileges and double-click the installation file vrlservice_3xxxx_x64.exe that came with the V-Ray 3.0 for Softimage installation archive. Follow the instructions of the installer.Upon the start of the installation, Windows may ask you for permission to run the installer with administrator privileges. Please confirm.

1. You will be presented with the V-Ray licensing agreement. Please take a moment to review the agreement. Click the “I agree” button to proceed:

2. Next you will see the default installation settings. To manually set-up the installation click Customize



3. Here you can specify the installation folder for V-Ray License Server. You are also given the option to Register the V-Ray license service – check this option if you want to register the V-Ray license server as a Windows service and automatically start upon Windows boot. In this case V-Ray license server will run in the background as a service and there will be no need to run it manually. There will be no V-Ray license server icon in the Windows System Tray.  You can also add a Firewall exception for the license server so it can run uninterrupted.

 

4. If there is a previous version of V-Ray License Server installed, the installer will detect it and ask you to uninstall it. Click OK to continue.

5. The installer will detect if there is an instance of V-Ray License Server running and ask you to close it. Do so and click Next to continue.

6. The installer will proceed to complete the installation. Click Finish

Installing V-Ray for Softimage


The core components of V-Ray for Softimage are distributed as a .xsiaddon file. If you've never installed add-ons before, we suggest that you look at the Softimage documentation on this feature first.

Before installing this distribution of V-Ray make sure that you have removed any previous versions. You can see how to uninstall V-Ray here.

 

1. First unpack the vray_adv_3xxxx_softimage20xx_64.zip file that you downloaded from our web site into a easily accessible location i.e. C:\vrayinstall\

2. In order to install V-Ray first run Softimage with administrative priviliges

2. Go to File > Add-on > Install

3. In the next dialogue click on the ... button and navigate to the folder that you unpacked the installation (i.e.  C:\vrayinstall\)  of V-Ray and select vray4softimage20xx.xsiaddon

4. Once the file is loaded click Install

5. You will get a message that asks you to restart Softimage. Please click OK an restart Softimage

Installing V-Ray Standalone

 


To install the V-Ray Standalone make sure your Windows account has administrative privileges and double-click the installation file vraystd_adv_3xxxx_x64_xxxx that came with the V-Ray for Softimage installation.

To complete the installation follow these steps:

1. You will be presented with the V-Ray licensing agreement. Please take a moment to review the agreement. Click the “I agree” button to proceed:



2. During the next step you will see the installation folder.  You can click "Customize" to adjust some of the installation settings.

 

3. If you choose to adjust the settings you will see the screen below. The options here allow you to specify:

a. V-Ray destination  – manually specify the location where V-Ray will be installed

b. How are you going to connect to the V-Ray license server – specifies whether the V-Ray license server will run locally or on another machine. If you select “Remote V-Ray license server on the network” you will be given fields to specify the IP address of the machine on which the V-Ray License server is running. Please leave the port 30304 unchanged.

Common settings for an installation with a local license server and default paths, should look like the screenshot below:



Once you are ready click "Install Now"

4. The installer will proceed to uninstall any previous versions and install V-Ray Standalone 3.0. If the installation was successful, you will get this screen.



 

Press the "Finish" button.

 

Glossary


Dongle – encrypted physical hardware lock, very similar to a USB flash drive which contains the product licenses.

WIBU-KEY drivers – drivers for the dongle.

Render Node – machine that is doing the actual rendering.

Distributed Rendering – dividing frames to buckets and rendering them on different render nodes by using V-Ray DR spawner, V-Ray Standalone or a V-Ray RT render server.

Network Rendering – rendering whole frames on each render node, for example by submitting jobs to job managers like Backburner.

V-Ray DR spawner – a V-Ray tool used to start 3ds Max in server mode for Distributed Rendering.

V-Ray SDK – a V-Ray Software Development Kit used for creation of custom materials and geometry.
