The scenes and assets are packed into a project file. These must be downloaded together to ensure that all textures and other assets will load correctly. Once you download the zip file, extract it anywhere on your machine and make sure not to change the folder structure. Downloading the scenes and assets   requires a free Chaos Group account

The courseware consists of five lessons with main and extra modules.

Lesson 1 - Intro

This lesson will guide us through the process of setting up a simple scene. It provides a base understanding of the V-Ray Interface and where to find the most commonly used parameters.

Main Modules:

Lesson 1 Main modules section has three main parts: UI Overview, Rendering Modes and VFB (V-Ray Frame Buffer).

It introduces the features of V-Ray and the basic workflow for lighting, shading and rendering a scene:

  • UI Overview - V-Ray Toolbar; Asset Editor: Main panel; Asset Editor: Material library; Asset Editor: Advanced Settings

  • Rendering modes - Interactive Rendering; Progressive rendering; Bucket rendering; Render output settings; Save Image settings
  • VFB - History setup; Region rendering; Color corrections; Save VFB image

Lesson 2

This lesson will guide us through the workflow for creating realistic exterior renderings.

Main Modules:

Lesson 2 Main modules demonstrates how to create an exterior rendering in both daytime and night time setups. The covered topics are:

  • Material override - Use color; Use material override
  • Sun & Sky - Interactive rendering; Sun parameters; Sky parameters; Ground Albedo
  • Basic Camera - Exposure EV; White balance control

  • Dome light setup - Create Dome; Change texture and tweak parameters

  • V-Ray Proxy - Export; Import; Instancing
  • V-Ray Fur - Add fur; Set properties; Set material

  • Aerial perspective - Enable the effect; Change parameters; Save image
  • High quality rendering - Quality slider (High); Denoiser; Image size; VFB color corrections; Save image
  • Night-time setup - Dim the dome light; Create artificial lights

Lesson 3

In this lesson we go over the workflow for generating realistic interior renderings.

Main Modules:

We start by setting up the Sun and Sky system and adjusting the Camera Exposure. In the next step we use Portal Lights to make it easier for V-Ray to calculate the illumination coming through the windows. Next we discuss the different Global Illumination engines that we could use in this case. We use the materials in the V-Ray Material Library to shade our scene. Finally we set-up V-Ray for High Quality rendering, using the Denoiser render element.

Lesson 3 demonstrates how to create a day time interior rendering. The topics covered are:

  • Sun, sky and camera setup - Sun position; Camera exposure
  • Portal lights - Create lights as component instances; Enable portal light (simple)
  • Global Illumination (GI) engines - Change to IM+LC; Tweak the quality slider
  • Materials - Create & Apply library materials
  • High Quality Rendering - Use the slider; Add V-Ray Denoiser; Create Material ID element

Bonus Modules:

This lesson has one bonus moduleNight Time Setup. It covers:

  • Add spot lights

  • Add IES lights

  • Balance the exposure

Lesson 4

This lesson covers the advanced materials.

Main Modules:

Lesson 4 demonstrates the different materials in V-Ray. It covers:

  • Library materials - Create; Edit; Tweak material texture placement

  • Generic materials - Create generic material; Set plastic; Set wood; Set glass; Set metal; Set metal with anisotropy; Set fabric with displacement
